Troy Davis’ last words to AI activists

One of the members of the AIUSA Abolish the Death Penalty Campaign team, met with Troy Davis yesterday to convey the support he received from Amnesty International. He asked the team to deliver this message back to everyone:

The struggle for justice doesn’t end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Davises who came before me and all the ones who will come after me. I’m in good spirits and I’m prayerful and at peace.

(Atlanta) – Following the announcement that the state of Georgia has executed Troy Anthony Davis, Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA (AIUSA), released the following statement:

“The U.S. justice system was shaken to its core as Georgia executed a person who may well be innocent. Killing a man under this enormous cloud of doubt is horrific and amounts to a catastrophic failure of the justice system. While many courts examined this case, the march to the death chamber only slowed, but never stopped. Justice may be blind; but in this case, the justice system was blind to the facts.

(Atlanta) – Following the announcement that the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles denied clemency to death-row inmate Troy Anthony Davis, Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA (AIUSA), released the following statement:

“It is unconscionable that the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has denied relief to Troy Davis. Allowing a man to be sent to death under an enormous cloud of doubt about his guilt is an outrageous affront to justice.

Troy Davis’ execution date set for September 21

The state of Georgia has set Troy Davis’ execution date for September 21st at 7pm in Jackson, Georgia.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear his final appeal earlier this year. But the story remains the same – Troy Davis could very well be innocent. Davis was convicted on the basis of witness testimony – seven of the nine original witnesses have since recanted or changed their testimony.

One witness said in a CNN news interview: “If I knew then, what I know now, Troy Davis would not be on death row.”

Freed Libyan prisoner of conscience hails Amnesty International

A prominent Libyan prisoner of conscience freed from detention has thanked Amnesty International for working on his behalf while in detention.

Jamal al-Hajji, a long-term critic of Colonel Mu’ammar al-Gaddafi, was freed from the notorious Abu Salim prison on 24 August following seven months of incommunicado detention for demanding reform.

“Words cannot express my gratitude for Amnesty International’s support. I want to thank all Amnesty staff and members who highlighted my plight throughout the years,” he told Amnesty International delegates who met him at his Tripoli home.
